WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the Senate voted to approve Mike Pompeo’s nomination for Secretary of State.

Earlier today, it was revealed that Pompeo’s ties to multinational oil and gas companies are even more pervasive than first reported. Pompeo has been referred to as the “Koch Brothers Congressman” and “the Congressman from Koch,” as he has done their bidding, including once introducing legislation to block the EPA from safeguarding communities from chemical plants. Pompeo accused President Obama of being “disloyal” to Christians and America, and, like Trump, has embraced anti-Muslim rhetoric. Pompeo is now the only climate-denying Secretary of State in history.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

"The United States deserves a Secretary of State who will fairly represent all Americans regardless of religion, gender, or sexual orientation. The United States deserves a Secretary of State who accepts known science and believes in acting with diplomacy. And the United States deserves a Secretary of State who will put the people first, not their billionaire donors. Mike Pompeo has time and again demonstrated that he is unfit to act as the nation’s top diplomat. The Sierra Club is committed to fighting for our communities and our environment, and we will challenge every extreme policy Mike Pompeo proposes.”
