WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 196-180 to pass the “Manage our Wolves Act,” (H.R. 6784) which legislatively eliminates Endangered Species Act protections for the majority of gray wolves throughout the continental United States.
In response, Jordan Giaconia, Sierra Club federal policy associate released the following statement:
“No amount of false advertising would change the fact that this bill is a dangerous and inappropriate Congressional overstep that would not only undermine the recovery of the gray wolf but also the Endangered Species Act itself.
“The return of the iconic gray wolf to the Great Lakes and Northern Rockies has been a true conservation success story supported by a majority of Americans and a testament to the effectiveness of the Endangered Species Act. Removing these protections would reverse decades of progress, immediately putting wolves in danger of being indiscriminately killed throughout the lower-48 states.
“Decisions about the fate of our imperiled wildlife should be governed by the sound science of expert fish and wildlife agencies, not the political whims of Congress. This bill is an unacceptable step backwards and should be rejected by the Senate.”
