Trump Administration Undermines Rationale for Clean Car Rollback -- Again

WASHINGTON, DC -- Yesterday, POLITICO reported that the Trump Administration plans to pare down the safety assumptions underlying the proposed rollback of the Obama era clean car standards. The Administration based the rollback on faulty evidence that freezing the fuel efficiency requirements would save 1,000 lives a year -- even after experts within the Administration disputed that claim.

In response, Sierra Club Clean Transportation for All Campaign Deputy Advocacy Director Andrew Linhardt released the following statement:

“Donald Trump and Andrew Wheeler just threw their only argument in the scrapyard. Despite claims to the contrary, the reality is that this rollback was never about making families safer -- it was always about lining their friends’ pockets. It’s time for Trump and Wheeler to hit the brakes on the rollback and focus on strengthening these standards -- as the public and the facts demand -- rather than continue with this charade on behalf of corporate polluters.”
