Lansing, MI – Today Washington Governor Jay Inslee joined in the widespread calls for the decommissioning of Enbridge’s Line 5 in the Great Lakes, citing the threat of an oil pipeline rupture to the world’s largest surface fresh water body and the vital role Michigan can play in reducing fossil fuels that are warming our planet
In response, Sierra Club Michigan Chapter Executive Committee member David Holtz released the following statement:
“We’re pleased to welcome Governor Jay Inslee in our fight to decommission Line 5 and not build a new oil tunnel in the Great Lakes. Every day that Line 5 is transporting oil in and near the Great Lakes it is a threat to our communities and our Great Lakes way of life. Every day this oil pipeline continues operating is a day when Michigan is adding to the problem of a warming planet instead of helping solve the climate crisis. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and all Michigan elected officials must show leadership and prioritize protecting Michigan and our planet by supporting actions that remove Line 5 from the Great Lakes.”
