WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, the Trump Administration released a Nuclear Posture review that seeks to expand the circumstances in which the United States will use nuclear weapons.

In response, Sierra Club Nuclear Policy Director John Coequyt released the following statement:

“The Trump nuclear doctrine is a dangerous and provocative departure from long-standing U.S. nuclear weapon policies. By threatening the use of nuclear weapons in asymmetrical conflicts, this doctrine will increase the potential use of nuclear weapons both by the U.S, and by other nations that possess nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, creating a new generation of so-called ‘low yield’ nuclear weapons like the Trump Administration is proposing to budget more than $1 Trillion toward this unnecessary and destabilizing technology.

“The risks posed by the creation and storage of nuclear weapons, accidents, unintentional launches and the intentional use of nuclear weapons in war are beyond the capacity of nations to predict or to control, or survive. The Sierra Club urges the elimination of all nuclear weapons in order to preserve and protect the planet.”
