NEW YORK – Today, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced that New Mexico will join 14 other states in adopting clean car standards requiring new cars sold in the state to emit fewer greenhouse gases. They also mandate an increasing percentage of cars sold in the state to be zero emissions. The governor made the announcement at Climate Week in New York City, joining other U.S. governors on a panel to discuss states advancing ambitious climate action in the face of federal inaction.
The move comes after last week’s announcement that the Trump administration is revoking California’s authority to set fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas standards stricter than federal standards. A few days later, California and nearly two dozen other states announced their lawsuit against the administration over the attack.
In response, Camilla Feibelman, Executive Director of the Rio Grande Chapter of the Sierra Club, released the following statement:
“We applaud Governor Grisham for standing up against the Trump administration’s indefensible attack on climate, clean air, and consumers. The clean car standards and the right of states to protect their residents from pollution enjoy overwhelming support and are backed by numerous scientific studies -- defending them is the common-sense thing to do.”
