Sierra Club Statement: Delaware Extends Popular Rebate Program for Electric Vehicles and Charging Stations

DOVER, DL – Today, Delaware’s Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) announced it will extend a popular rebate program available to drivers and businesses across the state for the purchase or lease of electric vehicles and charging stations through Dec. 31, 2020.

Governor Carney has committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a minimum of 28 percent by 2025. With Delaware’s transportation sector responsible for 35 percent of the state’s overall carbon pollution, bold commitments to clean transportation initiatives -- including rebate programs for electric vehicles like these --  are critical to meeting the state’s climate goals.

Funding for the program comes from Delaware’s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), which has provided more than $125 million for Delaware in new funding for renewables and energy efficiency.

In response, Sherri Evans-Stanton, director of the Delaware Chapter of the Sierra Club, released the following statement:

“We applaud Governor Carney and DNREC for extending this important rebate program for electric vehicles and charging stations, an essential part of reducing emissions from Delaware’s most polluting sector. This program ensures that Delawareans of all income levels can make the transition to clean transportation choices for the benefit of the environment, our health, and our wallets. We look forward to working with the Governor and DNREC on bold programs to slash transportation emissions and champion clean cars and clean air."
