Washington, DC – The Sierra Club, together with NRDC Action Fund, Oxfam America, Greenpeace USA, Friends of the Earth Action, Food and Water Watch, Oil Change International, DNC Environment and Climate Crisis Council, and a wide range of health, environmental, and other groups across the nation, are calling on Congress to pass significant cuts to fossil fuel subsidies embedded in the tax code.
In a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the 511 groups urge them to support the “elimination of fossil fuel subsidies and other giveaways in any infrastructure, economic recovery and/or reconciliation legislative package.”
In addition, more than 132,000 people across the country have submitted petitions calling for an end to fossil fuel subsidies.
“For far too long, government handouts have allowed the fossil fuel industry to pollute our communities and threaten our climate,” said Sierra Club Deputy Legislative Director Mahyar Sorour. “Our federal government should be investing in clean, renewable energy that creates jobs and benefits our communities, not using taxpayer dollars to prop up corporate polluters.”
