LANSING, MI - Today, the Sierra Club released a report of independent modeling and analysis of decarbonization pathways for Michigan’s transportation sector. The report calls on Michigan to ensure 100 percent electric vehicle sales and reduce driving overall by 2035 in order for the state to reach its climate goals and protect communities from toxic air pollution from vehicles.

Produced by Synapse Energy Economics on behalf of the Sierra Club, the report lays out a “Clean Transportation” pathway and analyzes the climate, public health, and economic benefits of the state pursuing it.

The newly-released report contains several major findings. The full report is available online as a PDF at sc.org/MITranspo

“Despite being home to the nation’s auto industry, Michigan has work to do to transform its transportation sector on the scale needed to hit our climate goals and protect residents from tailpipe pollution,” said Tim Minotas, Legislative & Political Coordinator for Sierra Club Michigan. “This report shows that Michigan must pull a variety of policy levers to reduce transportation emissions - from phasing out sales of gas-powered vehicles to improving and expanding public transit and making walking and biking safer - but we need to start pulling them now to mitigate the worst impacts of the climate crisis and protect the health of all Michiganders.”
