WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, the US Supreme Court issued its final ruling on the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case, overturning the long-held precedent in Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. This ruling, made by the conservative majority of the Supreme Court, undoes nearly 50 years of precedent set by Roe v. Wade, and 26 states are now poised to outlaw abortion immediately or as soon as possible, immediately curtailing the reproductive choice of more than 135 million people.

In response, Sierra Club Managing Director Eva Hernandez-Simmons issued the following statement:

“Today’s ruling confirms that the conservative majority of the Supreme Court is no longer respecting precedent and upholding the Constitutional rights guaranteed to all people who live in this country. This decision will jeopardize the health of people across the country, particularly low-income communities and communities of color.

“Regardless of today’s ruling, every person in America still deserves the right to live in healthy and safe communities with access to clean air, clean water, and healthcare. The Sierra Club has and will continue to support every person’s right to self-determination and bodily autonomy, and we will continue to rise and fight alongside our allies to ensure reproductive justice for all.”
