SACRAMENTO, CA – Yesterday, Toyota announced its support for the state of California’s authority to set vehicle emissions standards under the Clean Air Act. During the Trump administration, Toyota and other automakers attacked this authority and sided with Trump’s rollback of key climate and clean air protections.

This week, the California Air Resources Board is expected to adopt new emissions rules for passenger cars, trucks, and SUVs that are more stringent than the federal standards.

In response to the announcement, Katherine García, Director of the Sierra Club’s Clean Transportation for All campaign, released the following statement:

“We’ll save the praise for when Toyota starts actually focusing on electric vehicle production instead of slow-rolling its transition to EVs. Supporting California’s long-standing authority to set strong vehicle emissions standards is long overdue – we’re pleased Toyota is righting its disappointing record on this front, but there is so much more the automaker must do to catch up.”
