OPEC+ Cuts Are Yet Another Reminder of the Need to Break Dependence on Fossil Fuels

Today, the leaders of the OPEC+ energy cartel agreed to coordinated production cuts in an effort to raise oil and gas prices.

In response, Sierra Club Senior Director of Energy Campaigns Kelly Sheehan released the following statement:

“The actions of global oil and gas producers are once again putting American families at risk of skyrocketing energy prices this winter, thanks to our continued reliance on fossil fuels. As long as we rely on volatile global commodities like oil and gas, we will always be vulnerable to geopolitics and the whims of greedy drillers. The domestic oil and gas industry will certainly try to capitalize on Americans’ pain at the pump, as they have countless times before, to demand free rein to pollute our communities and climate in the name of lower prices. But we must not take the bait. The only way to achieve true energy security is to rapidly transition to affordable clean energy, not double down on risky fossil fuels.”
