WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, the bipartisan House January 6 Select Committee announced that they will be referring former President Donald Trump, Trump Attorney John Eastman and other co-conspirators to the Department of Justice for their role in the January 6, 2021 insurrection. In addition to these criminal referrals, the bipartisan Select Committee also referred several Members of Congress to the House Ethics Committee for their role in the January 6 insurrection.

The bipartisan Select Committee held nine public hearings in total, focusing on understanding the criminal conspiracy to overturn a free and fair election, including Trump’s leadership role in the lead-up to the insurrection and the details of the events at the Capitol that day.

The bipartisan Select Committee will be releasing their final report on the January 6 hearings on Wednesday, which will provide more insight into how the committee arrived at their recommendations.

In response, Sierra Club President Ramón Cruz issued the following statement:

“Today’s referrals confirm what we already know: no one is above the law.

“Our democracy, our freedom to vote, and the ability to protect our communities, our rights, and our environment depend on being able to hold our elected officials and those in power accountable.

“After almost two years of work, the bipartisan Select Committee reviewed over 140,000 documents and conducted over 1,000 interviews and depositions to uncover the truth of what led to the deadly insurrection on January 6.  The Sierra Club urges the Department of Justice and the other committees and agencies involved to follow the recommendations of the bipartisan January 6 Select Committee and ensure that, in our country governed by laws, even the most powerful and connected can be held accountable to their actions and that no one is above the law.”
