WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Following victory in a special election last night, Jennifer McClellan is set to become the first Black Congresswoman from Virginia. Sierra Club joins many other environmental and social justice organizations who also supported McClellan’s historic run and victory. She will succeed the late Congressman Donald McEachin in Congress.

In response, Sierra Club’s PAC Director Nidhi Khanna released the following statement:

“Congratulations to Congresswoman-elect Jennifer McClellan on her historic victory in last night’s special election. McClellan will be the first Black woman to be elected to Congress from Virginia and joins a record number of women in Congress.

“Voters in Virginia turned out to elect a true climate champion that will fight for clean air, water, and land throughout the commonwealth and beyond. We are eager to work with her in Congress to continue the legacy of fighting for our planet and humanity, just as the late Congressman McEachin did throughout his tenure of public service.”
