WASHINGTON, DC — On Tuesday, the Biden-Harris Administration announced its latest step to leverage the federal government’s purchasing power by modernizing standards to help ensure the world’s single largest purchaser of goods and services prioritizes American-made sustainable products and services.
The Sierra Club applauded the announcement for showcasing the administration’s willingness to continue pushing for decarbonization across many sectors, from heavy industries like steel and cement to other industries such as electronics, and for focusing on labeling and emissions reporting.
In response to the announcement, Yong Kwon, Senior Policy Advisor, issued the following statement:
“The federal government’s plan to prioritize purchases of sustainable products and services showcases its willingness to continue pushing for decarbonization and pollution abatement across many sectors. Not only will these new standards ensure government spending prioritizes and supports domestic manufacturing, they will also help prompt manufacturers to take advantage of the investments and technical assistance for new technologies made available through complementary public initiatives.
The focus on labeling signals a recognition that more support is needed in establishing common standards to protect the environment and public health, both in the public and the private sectors. We hope that this shows a demand for sustainable purchases not only in the sectors mentioned in the announcement, but in additional sectors going forward.”
