Washington, DC - Media reports indicate that the incoming Trump administration wants to use an executive order to rip away consumer protections from health-harming gas-burning appliances. The move would hamper local and state decision-making, limit consumer choice, and protect the heavily-subsidized fossil fuel industry over public health.
In response, Sierra Club Building Electrification Campaign Director Srinidhi Sampath Kumar issued the following statement:
“The gas industry has spent decades spreading disinformation about the danger of burning fossil fuels under our roofs. Trump and the GOP have shown they will do anything to line the pockets of their funders at the American Gas Association over protecting consumer choice and public health. The truth is, electric appliances, like induction stoves, are really easy to use, lower utility bills, and are safe and healthy unlike gas stoves that cause asthma and other health problems. Rather than 'protecting' costly and harmful gas stoves, the incoming administration should focus on bringing down costs for average people, including supporting home electrification.”
