WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the House Natural Resources Subcommittee for Water, Wildlife, and Fisheries held a hearing designed to attack two of the country’s most effective wildlife protection laws.
Using the recent Supreme Court decision in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo as an excuse, Congressional Republicans are trying to dismantle the clear mandates of the Endangered Species Act and Marine Mammal Protection Act.
Recent polling suggests an overwhelming majority of Americans support the ESA. One 2023 poll indicated 84% of all Americans support the ESA. Colorado College’s annual survey of Western states also shows that majorities of eight Western states also back the law.
In response, Bradley Williams, Sierra Club’s Deputy Legislative Director for Wildlife and Lands Protection, released the following statement:
“The American people have had 50 years to evaluate the Endangered Species Act and Marine Mammal Protection Act, and their verdict is clear – they overwhelmingly approve of these bedrock environmental laws. Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and their allies in Congress have decided to ignore science and the American people and are working overtime to dismantle the most effective conservation laws in our nation’s history. Through anti-science legislation, firing of critical staff, and appointing sycophants, the Trump-Musk administration is doing everything in its power to sell out imperiled species to benefit the bottom lines of corporate polluters. The American people will not take this lying down.”
