Sierra Club Reaction: Trump’s Absurd ‘Energy Emergency’

Washington, DC - Today, Donald Trump announced his intention to declare an “energy emergency,” despite the fact that the United States is the largest oil and gas producer in the world.

The anticipated executive order will be aimed at increasing the production of dirty fossil fuels, like oil and gas, while disregarding clean air and water safeguards, and undermining appliance standards that save energy and money. At the same time, Trump is expected to pause offshore wind permitting, hampering America’s ability to create jobs and generate energy.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“Donald Trump believes we are in such a dire energy emergency that he wants us to stop producing affordable clean energy and force dated and wasteful technology. The truth is, the only emergency he is focused on is repaying the corporate polluter executives for donating to his campaign – while we pay the real price of higher energy bills. If he truly wanted  to help the American people, he would keep investing in the clean energy solutions that are putting our communities back to work and lowering our utility bills, not deepening our nation’s costly reliance on dirty and expensive fossil fuels.”
