Washington, DC – Tonight, in a lengthy rant before a Joint Session of Congress, Donald Trump doubled down on his policies and actions that are polluting our clean air and water, raising prices, and making life more difficult for American families.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“Donald Trump continues to fail to show a single policy he has advanced or action he has taken to protect or help American families and our communities. That did not change tonight as the American people witnessed Trump double down on the flawed policies and dangerous rhetoric that have put tens of thousands of people out of work, emboldened polluters to further threaten our public lands and clean air and water, and put our collective future at risk. A president interested in leading would see that the clean energy boom that has powered our economic revival over the past few years has provided real, life-changing opportunities for workers, working families, and communities in red and blue states alike. A president interested in leading would be investing in the infrastructure that helps American families, not slashing it to cut taxes for billionaires. A president interested in leading would hear the calls for bold climate action that could help our country lead the world to avert the very worst of the climate crisis. And, above all, a president interested in leading would know that our collective dream for the future will never come true if we don’t protect clean air and clean water to ensure a safe and healthy life for all.

“Donald Trump has shown no interest in leading on behalf of the American people. The Sierra Club, along with its millions of members and supporters nationwide, will continue to stand up to Trump in the streets, in courts, in townhalls, and in state capitols across this country. We will fight like hell to protect our health and safety, lower our energy costs, and do all we can to ensure a livable planet.”
