Washington, DC - Today, the Trump administration released their response to the public comments on the Department of Energy’s LNG exports study that was finalized in December 2024. The study underpins the Department of Energy’s public interest determination for methane gas export applications. Energy Secretary Chris Wright says the agency will now begin to issue final orders for new and pending applications, despite the studies finding that LNG exports will displace renewables, raise energy prices, and contribute to climate disasters.

Known as LNG, gas exports supercharge climate change, destroy local ecosystems, pollute communities, and drive up domestic costs.

In response, Sierra Club Beyond Fossil Fuels Policy Director Mahyar Sorour issued the following statement:

“The studies released under the Biden administration clearly showed what we already knew about the harms of LNG exports. This response from the Trump administration follows the closing of a public comment period in which the fossil fuel industry has attempted to re-write the critical, unbiased findings from the original report. No matter how hard they try to hide it, Trump’s DOE can not bury the truth that increased LNG exports are simply not in the public interest. The facts are clear, LNG exports raise costs to Americans’ energy bills, are disastrous for frontline communities, increase public health harms, and perpetuate the climate crisis. Big Oil and Gas CEOs are the only beneficiaries of a rubberstamp for LNG projects.”
