WASHINGTON, DC –  A new E&E report outlines remarks from General Motors (GM) executives that the automaker is investing over four billion into manufacturing gas-powered vehicles while claiming it is still committed to an EV future.

GM has made past commitments to combating climate change. In CEO Mary Barra’s own words: “Across the globe, we’re seeing that no two communities are impacted by climate change in the same way. To drive sustainable change, we need to understand the perspectives of those most vulnerable. That’s why GM has committed to equitable climate action as we transition to an all-electric future.”

In response to the announcement, Sierra Club Clean Transportation for All Director Katherine García issued the following statement:

“Investing billions in gas-powered cars all but abandons GM’s commitment to manufacturing only electric vehicles by 2035. Transitioning to EVs is a crucial, long-term strategy that automakers must accelerate forward; it is irresponsible to reverse course based on who is sitting in the oval office.

“GM’s leadership could have shifted the auto industry away from its commitment to fossil fuels, which has had devastating consequences for our health and the environment.

“We’re in the midst of a climate crisis and instead of meeting the moment, GM is doubling down on polluting cars that will keep the U.S. hooked on fossil fuels for decades to come. More vehicle pollution will mean more deadly extreme heat days and more severe climate disasters that will cost the U.S. billions of dollars. GM’s zero-emission strategy would have helped the U.S. curb health-threatening air pollution and reduce the rates of asthma, lung cancer, and other respiratory diseases. GM must urgently change course and deliver the electric vehicles necessary for a healthier, more sustainable future.”
