WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, the Supreme Court ruled that Donald Trump’s mass firings of federal workers could move forward.

The ruling reversed lower court injunctions pausing the layoffs and paved the way for  federal agencies to implement widespread reductions in force.

Exemplified by the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, the Trump administration has pursued mass firings of the federal workforce. In February, the administration orchestrated the arbitrary and chaotic firings of thousands of federal workers across the government, including employees of the Departments of Agriculture and the Interior. The firings have left numerous offices and public landscapes without the necessary staffing support to facilitate public enjoyment and disaster preparedness.

In response, Jackie Ostfeld, director of Sierra Club’s Outdoors for All campaign, released the following statement:

“These chaotic layoffs are having a disastrous effect on our public lands. Without critical staff, our national parks, national forests, and national monuments are less resilient, less welcoming, and less safe for our families. Closed signs and long lines will become the norm, local economies will face decline, and threats like wildfire will become more dangerous for communities and visitors. It’s a recipe for disaster, and Donald Trump is going full steam ahead.”
