WASHINGTON, DC – Federalized National Guard troops equipped for military operations moved into Los Angeles’s MacArthur park, located in one of the city’s most immigrant-heavy communities, in a choreographed show of force intended to stage for follow-on law enforcement operations in the community. The sudden occupation caused the evacuation of children to a recreational facility. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has criticized the move, comparing it to an “armed occupation.” The Southern California Customs and Border Protection Chief has said agents will “go anywhere, anytime.” Raids conducted in partnership with military personnel have had a chilling effect on business operations and recreational use of the park.
In response, Roberto Morales, Campaign Manager, Outdoors for All, said:
“MacArthur Park is an iconic site in Los Angeles, one of the few parks available in one of the most park-poor areas of the city. People should have the freedom to enjoy nearby parks without the fear of masked individuals storming playgrounds. These actions are traumatizing children and instilling fear in communities that simply want to enjoy our public open spaces.”
In response, Barbara Heinsleigh, Sierra Club Angeles Chapter’s Central Group Chair, said:
“In addition to the show of force in MacArthur Park, masked federal agents have also invaded at least eight county parks. , The military occupation of our City is scaring Angelenos away from their outdoor spaces and causing a loss of business, tourists, culture and more. We will continue to stand in peaceful resistance to ICE’s occupation of our city.”
