Washington, D.C. - According to reporting, the U.S. Treasury issued new guidance that tightens restrictions for renewable energy tax credits and effectively limits renewable energy projects from accessing tax credits that would help lower the cost of energy and add more reliable and renewable energy to the U.S. electricity grid.
In 2024, domestic solar and wind energy production overtook coal production and contributed nearly one-fifth of the U.S.’s energy generation. Renewable energy is the cheapest form of energy, and is far more resilient than fossil fuels—which has failed Americans during extreme weather time and time again.
This announcement is yet another part of the series of attacks the Trump Administration has launched against renewable energy, including tightening restrictions for federal leases for renewable energy projects, rescinding all designated wind areas on the outer continental shelf, and eliminating the EPA’s Office of Research and Development.
In response, Sierra Club Climate Policy Director Patrick Drupp issued the following statement:
“Donald Trump is rigging the market in favor of fossil fuels, and everyday Americans will be left holding the bag. Trump and his pals in the fossil fuel industry both know that if given the choice, Americans will choose cheaper energy sources that don't pollute our air and water every time. They are doing everything they can to take renewable energy off the table, and force hardworking families to pay for expensive, unreliable, deadly fossil fuels.
“We will continue to push back against this slew of attacks from the Trump administration, and we will continue to make sure every American knows that their government is taking away their ability to choose cleaner and cheaper energy for their families and their futures.”
