WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Sierra Club has endorsed the Truth in National Parks Act, a bill recently introduced by Rep. Sharice Davids (D-KS), one of the first two Native American women elected to Congress, and Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY).

The legislation is aimed at stopping the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to erase and rewrite parts of Native American history at National Park Service (NPS) sites.

The bill would require that NPS interpretive and educational materials are historically and culturally accurate; prohibit the removal or alteration of accurate materials unless necessary to incorporate new, credible information; restore historically accurate materials removed or altered since January 20, 2025; require consultation with Tribal Nations and other relevant stakeholders before making changes to exhibits; and direct a report on co-stewardship agreements between Indigenous communities and federal agencies to strengthen Tribal partnerships.

In response, Gerry James, deputy director of the Sierra Club’s Outdoors For All campaign, issued the following statement:

“What’s happening in our national parks is a test of whether America is willing to confront the full story of our country. Removing or altering history erases people, erodes trust, and weakens the role these places play in shaping our collective understanding of our shared past. We commend Reps. Davids and Goldman for stepping forward with a clear response to this moment. This is about more than defending what exists – it’s about setting a standard for how our public lands tell the truth moving forward, ensuring they reflect the depth, complexity, and diversity of our country.”
