Detroit, MI - Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously against Enbridge Energy, saying the company cannot move a case from state to federal court. The lawsuit in question was brought by Enbridge in response to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s lawsuit to decommission the aging Line 5 pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac, a critical waterway.
In reaction to the news, Sierra Club Michigan Chapter Director Elayne Coleman issued the following statement:
“This decision by the Supreme Court is a big win for Michiganders. Enbridge appears willing to play fast and loose with Michigan’s clean water in its desire to continue operating the Line 5 pipelines despite how dangerous the threat of a leak is to the Great Lakes. Enbridge was careless with deadlines in the case, missing a 30-day window to initially move this case from state to federal court. Enbridge cannot be trusted with this aging pipeline. Now it is up to the state court to make the right decision and shut this pipeline down for good to protect our water, sacred lands, and public health.”
