Providence, RI - A Trump-appointed judge on the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island ruled against the Trump administration’s attempt to slash $7 billion of funding for solar energy projects.
The Solar For All program provides grant funding to regions across the country in order to expand affordable solar energy to over 900,000 households. Last summer, Donald Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency announced it would rescind the funds and ended the program.
Solar energy is one of the cheapest forms of energy, and in June 2026, solar production in the U.S. overtook coal production for the first month on record. Despite the administration’s attempts to cut funding and end projects, renewable energy has continued to grow in popularity and production in the country.
In response, Sierra Club Climate Policy Director Patrick Drupp issued the following statement:
“Solar energy is cheap, reliable, and quick to get online. It is a common sense solution to address the record-high electricity bills that families are seeing, while improving public health and cleaning up our air and water. We are glad to see the courts agree with Sierra Club that the administration’s attempt to end the Solar For All program is unlawful, and we will continue to defend this program to ensure families everywhere can reap the benefits of solar energy.”
