DENVER – The Colorado Sierra Club extends an enthusiastic congratulations to Governor-Elect Phil Weiser and all of the elected environmental champions, new and returning, across the state. Throughout his years as attorney general, Weiser has demonstrated a clear commitment to climate action and the protection of Colorado’s air, land, and water. This was echoed in his campaign promises to enact data center guardrail legislation, and his focus on climate resiliency, clean energy and meeting the state’s emission reduction goals. As he transitions into the role of governor, the importance of emphasizing Colorado communities and urgency of the climate crisis cannot be overstated.
The outcome of the 2026 midterms have proven to be a clear rebuke of the Trump Administration's policies which have driven up the cost of living for everyday people, perpetuated corporate greed, and rolled back environmental protections, harming the health and safety of Americans nationwide. From the victories in Congress and the governor’s office, wins in the state legislature, and the defeat of multiple special interest backed ballot measures, Coloradans sent a clear message: enough is enough.
“Last night’s election results were a clear statement. Coloradans are demanding a healthy environment, a liveable climate, clean, affordable energy, and corporate accountability,” said Colorado Sierra Club Chapter Director, Margaret Kran-Annexstein. “We are excited to work with incoming-Governor Phil Weiser’s administration, to hold polluters accountable, enforce our laws, and build a Colorado that will be resilient in the face of a changing climate and federal administration that is attacking workers, communities, and the clean, affordable energy transition.”
The Colorado Sierra Club looks forward to working with the many pro-environment lawmakers in the State House and State Senate to address some of the biggest issues Coloradans are facing. During the 2027 legislative session, the Sierra Club will work with legislators and the new administration to improve energy affordability, implement strong guardrails on AI data centers across the state, and ensure communities are protected from pollution.
The defeat of harmful amendments like 82 and 83 highlight that voters saw through deceptive language put forward by corporate interests and want protection for the environment, alongside local decision making and accountability. Wins in clean transportation added to the forward movement of Colorado’s climate goals.
The Colorado Sierra Club looks forward to continued protection of wildlife and public lands, building momentum for affordable and reliable clean energy, and working to build on Colorado’s promise of a future where we can all thrive.
