OMAHA, Neb. — At Berkshire Hathaway’s first annual shareholder meeting since Warren Buffett’s retirement, CEO Greg Abel claimed 93% of MidAmerican Energy’s electricity comes from renewable sources built in an affordable way. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, MidAmerican only produced about 65% of its power from renewable sources in 2024, while generating 26% from fossil fuels.

NEW YORK - The New York Public Service Commission is considering backtracking on programs designed to meet the clean energy goals laid out in the state’s landmark climate law, the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA). As part of a public comment period that closes May 1, Sierra Club members and supporters have submitted over 1,600 comments urging the PSC to protect the CLCPA and the state’s existing Clean Energy Standard.

Charlotte, NC – The Sierra Club is urging climate-conscious investors to vote against Duke Energy directors at May’s shareholders meeting due to the utility’s failure to follow through on stated climate goals. Specifically, Sierra Club is urging votes against Chair of the Corporate Governance Committee, Theodore F. Craver, Jr, and Chair of the Finance and Risk Management Committee, Robert M. Davis based on analysis by Majority Action and Sierra Club. The vote is part of a broader effort by the Sierra Club to encourage climate-conscious investors to vote against board members failing to support major corporations in adequately managing and mitigating climate risks. Today, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released guidance that will allow oil and gas operators to continue routine flaring, a harmful practice that unnecessarily releases climate-warming methane and other dangerous pollutants into the air. Routine flaring was set to be phased out by May 7th after years of preparation.

Sacramento, CA - In a written decision today, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) denied a SoCalGas application that would have charged customers $266 million to fund the controversial Angeles Link Project pipeline. This decision means that SoCalGas will either drop the project entirely or require shareholders to pay to develop the risky project.

Yesterday, U.S. Steel announced it will invest nearly $2 billion to build a direct reduced iron (DRI) facility at Big River Steel Works in Osceola, Arkansas. The DRI will provide a cleaner input to feed into the company’s electric arc furnaces that produce steel. Nippon Steel, the parent company of U.S. Steel, noted in a press release for a Japanese audience that the investment will ensure steel remains “mined, melted, and made in America” as the global market turns “towards decarbonization.”
