A new report details the extent to which the export industry for liquefied methane gas, known as LNG, benefits from billions of dollars in tax breaks, also called tax abatements, in Louisiana and Texas, with local communities suffering as a result. As the incoming Trump administration threatens to lift pollution safeguards and offer giveaways to the fossil fuel industry, this report brings much-needed scrutiny to the true harm LNG export projects cause by depriving communities of valuable tax revenue for critical infrastructure and services such as bridges, hospitals, schools, and climate resiliency.

Washington, D.C. – For the first time in nearly two decades, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed improved standards for nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from new gas-fired power plants. NOx molecules react with other compounds in the atmosphere to form ozone–the primary component of smog—which causes asthma attacks, lung damage, cardiovascular ailments, and premature death.

The November Board meeting marks one year since CalPERS announced a sustainable investment strategy with a focus on reaching net zero by 2050. In testimony, union leaders and beneficiaries called for more transparency around core investments that comprise CalPERS’ $100 million sustainability fund.
