WASHINGTON― Sens. Diane Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Steve Daines (R-Mont.) introduced legislation yesterday that would fast-track unsustainable logging, increase wildfire risk and jeopardize community safety. The measure stands in stark contrast to sensible, science-based legislation sponsored by Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), which would help communities in fire-prone areas without backcountry logging.

Today, 23 local groups delivered a letter signed by 533 Utahns to Governor Gary Herbert calling for him to issue a moratorium on utility shut-offs due to non-payment, and to require utilities to dismiss all utility bill debt incurred during the pandemic.

Sierra Club members and partners today will kick off a statewide week of action through an online screening of the documentary “We Neighbors,” this evening which focuses on the experiences of residents living near We Energies’ coal-fired power plants in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. The week of action intends to engage people across the state through a series of virtual activities as unprecedented challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic have forced climate activists to rethink how the environmental movement operates. In July, activists at home from across Wisconsin advocated for an extension to the utility shut-off moratorium and won.

Boston, M.A.-- The Massachusetts House voted on H.4912, a proposed rewrite of a Senate bill passed in January. The bill would create carbon emissions targets for 2030 and 2040, requiring the state to reduce emissions by 50% and 75% below 1990 levels respectively. The bill also would establish a target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050, create a clean energy equity workforce, and fund energy efficiency and weatherization upgrades for public housing, just to name a few. It was amended to include essential protections for environmental justice communities that are already suffering from environmental pollution and climate impacts.
