Washington, D.C.– The U.S. Senate voted to permanently reauthorize the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) as part of the Natural Resources Management Act (S. 47). The bill now moves on to the House of Representatives.

For decades, Michigan frontline environmental justice communities have suffered some of the worst effects of state pollution safeguards not being enforced, lack of infrastructure maintenance, and industry friendly interpretation of federal environmental regulation. Appalling neglect by state officials of their duties to these communities has resulted in some of the worst tragedies in recent memory, felt across the country. Michigan’s new Governor wants to change that with her first executive order, but now Republicans in the state legislature are attempting to derail her environmental agenda, with the Senate today voting to reject the executive order.

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Board of Directors voted today to retire the remaining coal unit at the Paradise power plant in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, and the Bull Run coal plant in Anderson County, Tennessee. The vote was a clear repudiation of President Trump’s inappropriate and unusual tactic to block the TVA staff’s recommendation to phase out the units over the next several years.

The Sierra Club asked the public to write climate valentines to the EPA for delivery and today it will deliver hundreds to former coal lobbyist and acting EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler for the sole hearing on his effort to roll back life-saving climate standards for dirty power plants.

Philadelphia, PA -- Today, Acting EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler announced the EPA’s national action plan on PFAS. PFAS chemicals are widely detected in drinking water and toxic at very low levels. However they are currently exempted from most environmental safeguards. Still, EPA has the power to mandate water testing, stop on-going pollution, and clean up contaminated places.
