Topeka, KS – The Kansas Supreme Court issued a decision today to uphold a permit for the proposed Sunflower coal plant near Garden City, Kansas. Earthjustice, representing the Sierra Club, challenged the permit in court in January 2016 arguing that the fast-tracked permit failed to comply with the Environmental Protection Agency’s greenhouse gas rules by failing to set gas emission limits.
Farmington, New Mexico-- Today, PNM announced that an extensive analysis of San Juan Generating Station in Waterflow, New Mexico found that the coal-fired power plant is no longer economically viable after 2022. This result will almost certainly expedite PNM’s transition from the 1800 MW plant to other sources of power three decades before its previously assumed closure.

Owensboro, KY - Sierra Club today applauded the Owensboro Municipal Utilities Commission for voting to retire the second unit of its Elmer Smith coal-burning power plant. This announced closure will retire the Elmer Smith plant in its entirety prior to 2023, as a 2019 retirement date for Unit 1 was announced in 2015.

Sierra Club Response To Trump’s Rigged Budget Proposal
Washington, DC -- Today, Donald Trump’s Department of Justice filed a motion announcing its intention to rescind the Bureau of Land Management’s safeguards for hydraulic fracturing (fracking). The DOJ has asked the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals to hold the Obama administration's appeal defending the rule in abeyance while they rescind the rule.
