Sierra Club Summer of Action

This summer, the Sierra Club organized across the country, uniting under one banner to protect clean air and water, public lands, outdoor access, and our shared desire to shape safer, cleaner, and more affordable communities.

Twenty two chapters organized at least forty events. These events ranged from town halls and congressional bird dogging to community engagement and direct meetings with decision makers.

Our national programming and collective efforts drive powerful engagement across the country:

  • Our toolkit and three national organizing labs generated 1,067 RSVPs. These resources equipped participants with skills and tools to lead on the ground work and drive critical federal actions.
  • The Summer of Action demonstrated what is possible when shared national moments and narratives connect with important local fights.
  • Together, we amplified local campaigns, advanced key federal priorities, developed grassroots leaders, and proved our collective power as an organization.

You can read more in the Summer of Action Report.

New Jersey particularly demonstrated how a shared national moment can translate into meaningful local actions. The following is a report from Maegan Kuhlmann, the New Jersey Chapter Organizer.

“On September 9th, the New Jersey Chapter gathered for our DataOne Vineland Site Visit & Activist Meetup. Generously hosted by a local farm, we were able to get a direct look for ourselves at the largest and most egregious data center project in the state. Alongside community members, and grassroots advocates from Sustain South Jersey, attendees learned about community efforts to oppose the Vineland data center, and the broader context of data centers in New Jersey.

Following the site visit, we regrouped at a local bar for a deeper discussion on the importance of grassroots advocacy at both the state and local level to ensure NJ communities are protected from unfettered data center development. This event highlighted the personal impacts of data center development on communities, and attendees were provided with grassroots organizing materials, and encouraged to join our Chapter work on data centers.”
