Sierra Club California Urges a Yes Vote on Proposition 50 to Protect Fair Representation
Sacramento, CA - Today, Sierra Club California announces support for Proposition 50, a practical and time limited measure that protects Californians’ voice in Congress during a period of instability in other states. The measure would use a temporary congressional map through 2030 and restore map drawing to the independent Citizens Redistricting Commission in 2031.
Proposition 50 preserves voter accountability now while reaffirming California’s long term commitment to transparent and independent redistricting. It provides stability for communities, avoids last minute boundary changes, and sets a clear sunset that returns authority to the Citizens Redistricting Commission in the next cycle.
Fair representation is essential to secure clean air and clean water protections, wildfire and drought investments, and climate action that lowers household costs and reduces pollution. Stable and representative districts help frontline communities hold decision makers accountable and win the resources they need.
Proposition 50 keeps California aligned with good government standards and signals strong support for independent redistricting models nationwide. It is limited in scope, clear in purpose, and focused on protecting voters rather than parties.
