WWG members pay close attention to social justice inequities across the state. Some of the issues in Indiana in 2026 are data centers, pollution, fossil fuel dependence, solar energy resistance, and laws hostile to LGBTQIA+ Hoosiers.
Data Centers - Data centers require massive amounts of resources, and directly affect the environment and health of the people both near and far. The state of Indiana actively courts data centers, many of which get permission to build against the will of the people. But resistance is strong. The Sierra Club Hoosier Chapter’s sister organization, Indiana Beyond Coal, and ally organization, Citizen’s Action Coalition, are leading the push to stop the data center rush in Indiana. In April 2026, the Sierra Club Hoosier Chapter joined in a 27-organization petition calling on the state to pass a data center moratorium. Please also see our Energy tab for more information.
Pollution - Indiana consistently ranks in the bottom 5 in the country on all metrics of pollution: dirty air, dirty water, dirty soil. All creatures need a healthy environment to thrive, and the Winding Waters Group believes that all Hoosiers deserve a healthy environment. WWG members regularly attend state-wide conferences, webinars, and action days at the Statehouse to learn more about the state of pollution in Indiana, and to show our support for the human right to a healthy environment.
Fossil Fuel Dependence - Indiana is moving toward a renewable energy grid faster than any other state, but that’s because we have the farthest to climb! 80% of Indiana’s energy was produced with fossil fuels in 2025, and the data center demand for electricity will likely exacerbate that situation. WWG members know that fossil fuel dependence damages the environment and people. As with pollution and solar power, we work with legislators to encourage the clean energy transition.
Solar Power - Winding Waters Group members believe that all Hoosiers deserve the right to choose the source of energy used to power their homes and cars, as is the case in most other states. Our elected officials continue to block legislation allowing Hoosiers to make these choices, so WWG members work actively to lobby our representatives to support energy freedom, and also work to write legislation allowing homeowners to choose home solar.
LGBTQIA+ Rights - Governor Mike Pence’s administration (2012 - 2017) saw LGBTQIA+ Hoosiers begin to lose their rights as a barrage of discriminatory bills were passed. During this time, the federal Marriage Equality Act of 2015 gave Hoosiers marriage equality. In 2020 during the Holcomb administration, an organized attack on transgender rights in Indiana began, with the general assembly passing multiple unjust laws limiting the rights of transgender Hoosiers. These attacks continued and more restrictive laws were passed until the 2026 session, when NO anti-trans laws were passed for the first time in 6 years.
The Winding Waters Group stands firmly that restricting the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community is unjust. Members of the WWG table at Columbus Pride in September and attend LGBTQIA+ Day at the Statehouse in February every year, and support rights organizations in their work across Indiana.
