The March, 2025, newsletter from the Iowa Chapter of the Sierra Club is now available. In this issue, you will find:
Legislative Update
Legislative Update - The legislature is headed to the second funnel on April 4 where many of the bills will be side-lined.
REAP - Resource Enhancement and Protection funding. We are asking the legislators to fully fund REAP at $20 million and to extend REAP beyond 2026.
Let voters decide on their Supervisor Representation - The legislature passed a bill that mandates that the how the board of supervisors are selected in Johnson, Story, and Black Hawk Counties. The supervisor would be required to reside in the district they are running in and the only voters who could vote for the supervisor are those living in the district. The Sierra Club is asking that the governor veto the bill.
Energy Bill has issues - The legislature is working on the Governor’s energy act. The Sierra Club has major concerns about this legislation. By concentrating on economic development, the legislation fails to address keeping power reasonably priced for the consumer. We are asking the State Representatives to oppose HF834 and the State Senate to oppose SF585.
CO2 Pipeline Update
Carbon Pipeline Legislation Update - Ask your state representative to support HF943 and HF610. Note: HF943 is expected to be debated by the House on March 26. Then ask your state senator to support HF943 and HF610 once these bills are moved to the Senate. HF943 bans the use of eminent domain for carbon pipelines on agricultural zoned land. HF610 expands who can intervene in cases before the Utilities Commission.
