- John Muir and Asa Gray shared several botanical expeditions together. Muir traveled with Sir Joseph Hooker, Asa Gray, and John Bidwell around the Lassen Peak and the Mt. Shasta region botanizing in the summer of 1877.
- A portion of Muir's tribute to the great botanist Linnaus tells the story of John Muir's travels with Asa Gray and Sir Joseph Hooker in the forests around Mount Shasta.
- A letter from John Muir to Asa Gray dated January 13, 1878 describes the Yellow and Jeffrey Pines.
- Gray named several plants after Muir, which Muir had collected for him. Erigeron muirii , Muir's Fleabane, was named by Gray.
