Wanda Muir-Hanna

1881-1942

The eldest of John Muir's two daughters, sister of Helen Muir. Married Thomas Hanna in 1906. Wanda Thomas had six sons and one daughter: Strentzel Hanna (1907 - 1973) John Muir Hanna (1909 - 2007) Robert Elmer Hanna (1914 - 1958) Jean Louise Hanna Clark (1919 - 1976) She not only grew up in the Muir house, but raised her own family on the Strentzel/Muir property, much of it in the Martinez Adobe located on the site.   • She not only grew up in the Muir house, but raised her own family on the Strentzel/Muir property, much of it in the Martinez Adobe located on the site.
  • She completed at least three years of study at the University of California, Berkeley before withdrawing early to care for her ill sister and aging mother.
  • She was buried in the Muir-Strentzel Hanna Cemetery on the family's land in Martinez, California.
  • Nearby "Mount Wanda" is named in her honor, where her famous father took her and her sister Heln for walks to view wildflowers and the views of Carquinez straits. Today it is a popular hiking spot, part of the John Muir National Historic Site.
