Biddeford’s mayoral election marked an important shift for a community seeking stronger environmental leadership. Sierra Club Maine endorsed Liam LaFountain because he brings a thoughtful, community-centered approach to land-use planning and climate resilience, along with a genuine willingness to engage with local advocates, conservation partners, and residents. His election reflects a growing public understanding that climate resilience, rapid development, and housing affordability are closely linked, and that Biddeford’s future depends on planning decisions that address these challenges through sustainable, long-term strategies.
As Biddeford enters a crucial phase of its Comprehensive Plan update and begins defining long-term strategies to protect its natural and water resources, Liam will have an opportunity to realign the city’s growth trajectory with core sustainability principles. This includes directing development toward areas already supported by existing infrastructure, strengthening protections for sensitive ecosystems, and ensuring the city’s planning framework incorporates current environmental data and climate projections. These decisions will influence everything from water quality and stormwater management to transportation networks and the availability of affordable, environmentally responsible housing.
For Sierra Club Maine and the Biddeford–Saco Climate Action Team, Liam’s victory represents a promising moment for deeper collaboration and meaningful progress. In a time of national political uncertainty, it is often at the local level where climate action becomes tangible. Biddeford now has the opportunity to chart a more sustainable future, one that protects critical habitat, expands green space, and builds a community where people can thrive while protecting the natural systems that sustain it.
