CAPE COD, MA – Sierra Club Massachusetts submitted preliminary comments to the Cape Cod Commission on the Cape Cod Canal Pipeline Relocation Project requesting close scrutiny of claims made by Enbridge and Algonquin Gas Transmission (AGT) in their Development of Regional Impact (DRI) application. The first Cape Cod Commission subcommittee hearing to discuss this taxpayer-funded DRI project will take place on October 28th at 5pm at 239 Main Street, Buzzards Bay, MA 02532.
Enbridge and Algonquin Gas Transmission maintain that this project is a relocation despite preliminary calculations showing that the proposed new pipeline running underneath the Canal may be able to carry at least twice the amount of natural gas than the two bridge-attached pipelines it will be replacing. The proposed project was already issued a certificate through the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act office and is in the process of federal environmental review. No validation of the proponents’ claims, nor consideration of the potential impacts of enlarged infrastructure enabling increased gas use by consumers on the Cape have been required.
“This project is a clear attempt to use $302 million in taxpayer dollars to increase expensive and polluting fuel on Cape Cod and drive more profits for Enbridge and AGT,” said Vick Mohanka, Chapter Director of Sierra Club MA. "This is just one of three pipeline expansion projects that are planned for Massachusetts, as the Governor’s switch to pipeline support is emboldening fossil fuel companies to extract more money from the Commonwealth and ratepayers.”
