President Donald Trump has aggressively advanced the radical Project 2025 agenda, rolling back clean energy and climate policies, attacking civil rights, and undermining key agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These actions threaten working families and communities nationwide.
The Michigan Sierra Club is fighting back at every level. As federal attacks on environmental protections persist, state and local action is more critical than ever. Representing 150,000 members and supporters, we are pushing strong policies to counter federal rollbacks, preserve democracy, and advance clean energy and environmental protections. As the Michigan legislature kicks off its new legislative session under a split legislature, our 2025-2026 priorities include:
- Safeguarding Communities While Enhancing Access and Affordability: This priority involves advocating for transportation, clean energy, public land and building decarbonization policies that cut climate pollution while improving access to transportation, clean energy and public lands. It also means championing water affordability, utility accountability, community solar, and legislative efforts to hold industries accountable for pollution. In addition, preventing microplastics, waste and other toxins from contaminating our food, water, homes and neighborhoods is part of this effort. Furthermore, we will fight to protect federally appropriated Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) dollars and ensure our state agencies are taking strong proactive measures to protect our state.
- Defending 2023-2024 Climate and Clean Energy Victories: We will oppose legislative attempts to exempt fossil gas electric plants in the Upper Peninsula from clean energy standards and efforts to roll back renewable energy siting provisions.
- Rejecting False Climate Solutions: Sierra Club will fight policies that promote misleading solutions to the climate crisis, like biomethane, ethanol, waste incineration, and biomass burning.
- Defending Democracy: Our efforts include ensuring that voting rights are protected, that fair judges are appointed, and fossil fuel and utility lobbyists don’t silence our voices. A functioning democracy is crucial for environmental justice.
The urgency of the climate crisis and widespread injustices demand bold action. The Michigan Sierra Club is committed to standing and fighting for a healthier, more equitable future. This is our moment to act decisively and ensure lasting protections for our planet and communities.
