On February 5, thousands of Sierra Club members and supporters across the country took to the streets in protest to make one thing clear: No one voted for the billionaires to take over our federal government. One protestor I spoke to was an 82-year-old woman who traveled from Sault Saint Marie to Lansing to participate in her first ever protest. “I never thought we would see a fascist coup in America,” she said. “We can’t roll over. We must fight.”
In recent days, thousands of people called elected officials and hundreds of Michigan Chapter volunteers showed up at the offices of their representatives from Detroit to Marquette. Sixty volunteers visited Congressman John Moolenaar’s office in Caledonia to ask what he and his colleagues will do to adhere to our Constitution and defend their constituents.
We made an impact! U.S. Senators, including Michigan’s Gary Peters and Elissa Slotkin, held the floor all night to protest the appointment of Russell Vought, a Project 2025 author, as the director of the Office of Management and Budget. Articles of impeachment have been filed. Federal employee unions and agencies, nonprofits, scientists and student organizations are among the many groups suing the Trump administration over the barrage of illegal and unconstitutional executive orders. A federal judge has slapped an injunction on Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) access to private treasury data for virtually every American.
“I’ve talked to many people today, Democrats and Republicans, who are furious about what is happening,” remarked a Lansing area high school student who participated in the protests. “There is massive agreement that this will hurt everyone and weaken our nation. I’m hopeful though, because we are now moving in unity. We can’t keep playing nice and trying to work with these guys,”.
