This past week, Sierra Club joined Transportation Riders United, Michigan Public Transit Association, Amalgamated Transit Union and over 100 transit supporters from all across Michigan. We spent the day in over 50 meetings to talk to state policymakers about how essential transit is for Michiganders and why they need to boost state investment in public transit.
Supporting public transit in Michigan is crucial for economic growth, accessibility and sustainability. Beyond practical benefits, strong transit systems contribute to vibrant, walkable communities, increased property values, lowered emissions and enhanced quality of life. Expanding and improving public transportation in Michigan is a smart investment in the state’s future.
Unfortunately, for decades, Michigan has failed to invest in the transit Michiganders need and want. However, after being neglected for so long, we have the potential for a much-needed funding boost. As the governor and lawmakers develop road funding solutions, a broad coalition of Michigan organizations, including the Michigan Sierra Club, have come together asking them to invest in a sustainable, affordable transportation system instead of focusing exclusively on pavement-only solutions for roads. To achieve this, our groups have outlined four essential principles that should guide any transportation or road funding plan:
- Comprehensive Investment: Funding must support the entire transportation system, including public transit, rail, ferries, pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure and services for seniors.
- Fairness for Efficient Vehicles: Policies should not disproportionately burden fuel-efficient or alternative energy vehicles.
- Protection of Vital Services: Transportation funding should not come at the expense of essential services like education and local government operations.
- Prioritizing Maintenance: Fixing and maintaining existing infrastructure should take precedence over expanding roadways.
Transportation is now the leading source of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in Michigan, surpassing the electricity sector. By adhering to these principles, we can tackle the climate crisis and protect the air we breathe by shifting to pollution-free electric vehicles, increasing accessible and affordable public transit and making our communities safer for walking and biking.
