Six-Month Legislative Wrap-Up: Defending Progress, Driving Change

As summer heats up in Lansing, so does the fight for Michigan’s future. The Sierra Club Michigan Chapter has spent the first half of this legislative session in overdrive, standing up to polluters, pushing for bold climate action and demanding a government that puts people and the planet first.

With our environmental partners, we’re leading efforts to strengthen Michigan’s rules around carbon capture, defend our clean energy law from rollback attempts and stop new taxpayer giveaways to the nuclear industry. We’re also fighting for a state budget that invests in clean energy, public transit and community health, instead of lining corporate pockets.

So far, we’ve weighed in on over 70 bills. https://www.quorum.us/spreadsheet/external/ZOrXJmBKTglinqLjdkgr/ We’re stopping bad shoreline development, pushing back on deregulation of waste systems and working for stronger protections against toxic pollution. We’re advancing solutions to tackle plastic pollution, protect pollinators, label dangerous PFAS chemicals in everyday products and cut methane emissions from landfills.

One of our proudest moments? A powerful Lobby Day at the Capitol,https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjYXNs7i3lQ  where staff and volunteers joined forces to advocate for cleaner energy and healthier communities. That momentum carried into a strategic lobbying blitz that helped stall a harmful bill and showed lawmakers that Michiganders are paying attention.

We also released our 2023–2024 Legislative Scorecard https://www.sierraclub.org/michigan/blog/2025/06/sierra-club-michigan-releases-2023-24-legislative-scorecard, so you can see how your legislators are voting on the issues that matter.

Michigan’s budget is in limbo, and the stakes just got higher. Lawmakers missed the July 1 deadline, leaving state agencies, services and programs hanging. The Senate passed its plan, but the House Republicans are holding out, pushing a separate roads deal and refusing to put forth their own budget. Meanwhile, to add further fire, the holes created by the federal government’s tax and spending cut plan will squeeze Michigan even harder with stalled funding for key programs and increased economic uncertainty. With no votes scheduled and the October 1 deadline approaching fast, Michigan is on a collision course to a state government shutdown.

At a time when federal agencies are under attack, state action is more important than ever. That’s why we’re staying in this fight and we need you with us. Stay engaged. Stay loud. Let’s keep building power for a just, livable Michigan.
