WASHINGTON, DC. - Today, the Senate is poised to vote on Mitch McConnell's proposal to end the Trump shutdown without addressing the DACA crisis created by the President.

On Friday, the United States Federal Government shut down after the Republican Party, which controls all branches of government, failed to appropriate the funding that would allow the government  to continue operating. The shutdown was precipitated by Donald Trump’s decision to rescind the DACA program, subsequently allowing no workable solution, and all the while pressing for what is widely recognized as an expensive and environmentally destructive border wall boondoggle.

In Response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune Released the Following Statement:

“The Republican Party controls all branches of the Federal Government, but has failed to put forward a deal that will keep the government open, safeguard our health and communities, and stop families from being torn apart and children from being deported. Senators should oppose this proposal because it does nothing to address the root causes of the Trump shutdown and is based on empty promises.

“Everyone in the Senate should have learned the lesson Senators Flake and Collins learned: you can’t trust Mitch McConnell. His promises are empty from the start.

“The majority of the American public want our leaders to stand up for the values we all share by protecting the 800,000 Dreamers who are threatened by this deal. Any proposal that does not solve this crisis leaves us exactly where we started.”
