Three New Directors Join Sierra Club Foundation Board

Oakland, CA–The Sierra Club Foundation is proud to appoint three new members to its board of directors: City of Atlanta Chief Resilience Officer Stephanie Stuckey, Colorado environmental philanthropist Jill Soffer, and Joel Sanders, a retired attorney and lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law. These three new directors offer deep expertise in the areas of urban sustainability, legal ethics, and low-carbon development. They have worked in partnership with groups ranging from the Rockefeller Foundation to Natural Resources Defense Council and served in positions for the Department of Justice and the Georgia General Assembly.

“Our Board of Directors welcomes these three new members,” said Dan Chu, Sierra Club Foundation Executive Director. “They bring new capacity and knowledge to our board, broaden our geographic reach and expand our networks.”

About Joel Sanders: Joel is a retired partner of the law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, where he served as the partner-in-charge of the firm’s Bay Area offices and as a member of the firm’s executive, compensation, finance, hiring, and ethics committees. Earlier in his career he was a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice. Joel remains active in the legal community as a lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law. He also serves on the boards of the East Bay Community Law Center and the Berkeley Center for Law, Business, and the Economy. Joel earned his BA from Antioch College and his JD from the University of California, Berkeley. He has lived in Oakland, CA since 1983, where he enjoys hiking, other outdoor activities, and traveling.

About Jill Soffer: Jill is a Carbondale, Colorado based philanthropist largely focused on environmental progress, carbon reduction, and sustainable farming. She currently serves on the boards of Natural Resources Defense Council Action Fund and The Wilderness Workshop, a group protecting the White River National Forest in the Colorado high country. Jill was a developer and interior designer of sustainable “green” homes and a LEED Accredited Professional. She is a graduate of Brown University and Barnard College. Her hobbies include yoga, river trips, horses, and spending time in her beloved Colorado mountains.

About Stephanie Stuckey: Stephanie is the Chief Resilience Officer for the City of Atlanta where she works in conjunction with the Rockefeller Foundation’s 100 Resilient Cities campaign. She previously served for 14 years as state representative from Decatur to the Georgia General Assembly and led GreenLaw, a Georgia environmental public interest law firm, as their executive director. Stephanie received both her undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Georgia and currently serves on local environmental boards including EarthShare of Georgia and the Olmsted Linear Parks Association. She has been recognized with the Outstanding Lawyer in Public Service award by the Atlanta Bar Association, and is a member of the Institute for Georgia Environmental Leadership. Stephanie currently resides in Atlanta, GA. ###
