WASHINGTON, D.C. -- One year ago today, Donald Trump announced that he intends to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement. The Agreement, which entered into force on November 4, 2016, has been signed by every nation on earth. The earliest the U.S. will be able to complete the withdrawal is November 4, 2020, one day after the next U.S. Presidential election.

Since Trump made his announcement, natural disasters have cost the U.S. $296 billion in damages.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

"Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement remains one of the most ignorant and dangerous decisions of his presidency. While it is clear that Trump has learned nothing about leadership, diplomacy, or responsibility over the past year, the American people have shown that they are resilient in the face of inaction. We have and continue to see cities, states, businesses, universities, and investors committing to meaningful climate action and playing a critical role in keeping the United States on track to meet its commitments. The wave of American ingenuity, innovation, and clean energy will progress long after Trump leaves the White House.”
