WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, in an effort to clean up the political crisis created by his policy of dividing children from their parents along the border while doing nothing to fix the humanitarian crisis, Donald Trump signed an executive order that would continue to jail and cage kids and families along the border who come to the United States seeking a better life.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
"No one should be fooled: nothing about Trump’s executive order changes the fact that children will continue to be locked up in cages along our border simply because their families tried to seek a better life in this country. All Trump has done today is to pretend to clean up a crisis that he created. Meanwhile, the trauma suffered by these kids because of Trump’s policies will last forever, and more children and families will be harmed, until our broken immigration system is fixed and Trump’s racist agenda is stopped.
“Using the lives of young children as political bargaining chips will never solve this crisis, nor will terrorizing our borderlands communities. The first step to any real solution is treating every human being with respect, and by protecting those who come here seeking help, not jailing them. We must reject the militarization of the borderlands and the billion-dollar boondoggle of a border wall and work to establish a just, humane, and welcoming immigration policy that offers a pathway to citizenship for the thousands of young people who call this country home.”
