DETROIT, MI - Last night, Gretchen Whitmer secured the Democratic Nomination in the Michigan Gubernatorial Primary. The Michigan Sierra Club Independent Action PAC ran a campaign in support of Whitmer that sent mailers to 100,000 Democratic primary voters highlighting Whitmer’s strong progressive environmental record. Whitmer is committed to standing up to corporate polluters and protecting the public’s health by prioritizing clean drinking water for all.
Whitmer will seek to replace Republican Governor Rick Snyder in the general election on Nov. 6.
Mike Berkowitz, Legislative & Political Director of the Sierra Club Michigan Chapter, released the following statement on Whitmer’s victory:
“The Sierra Club is proud to congratulate Gretchen Whitmer on her victory, and we are equally proud to say that we will do everything we can to ensure that she becomes Michigan’s next governor.
“Whitmer is dedicated to protecting public health and the environment in Michigan, including by cleaning up our drinking water, investing in the booming clean energy economy, and shutting down Line 5. Gretchen has the experience, values and vision needed to protect Michigan’s environment and public health.
“In contrast, Republican nominee Bill Schuette is the worst environmental Attorney General we've had in decades, leading the charge against air pollution safeguards, ignoring the climate crisis, and consistently siding with corporate polluters. His support for keeping oil pipelines in the Straits of Mackinac is a slap in the face to Michigan citizens and the Great Lakes. We will work diligently to stop Bill Schuette and make sure Gretchen Whitmer becomes the next Governor of Michigan.”
